In a shocking verdict, a local court in Meerut has sentenced Muskaan Rastogi and her lover, Sahil Shukla, to death for the murder of Saurabh Rajput, a merchant navy officer, which took place last year. The sentencing followed their conviction two weeks prior, with the judge announcing the decision on Wednesday. The case revolved around a blue plastic drum filled with concrete, which served as a key piece of evidence in the gruesome crime.
The court proceedings, which spanned 126 hearings and included 22 witness testimonies, culminated in a ruling by District Judge Arvind Kumar Mishra. The judge determined that Rastogi and Shukla had conspired to kill Rajput, ultimately dismembering his body and hiding it in the drum. The judge remarked on the broader implications of such crimes, noting the fear they instill in society. During the sentencing, Rastogi's parents expressed their belief that Rajput was a good person and stated they would not oppose the death penalty for the convicted.
The prosecution outlined a chilling sequence of events leading to the murder. On March 3, 2025, Rastogi allegedly drugged her husband at their home in Indra Nagar, allowing Shukla to arrive shortly after and stab Rajput to death. They then dismembered his body in the bathroom and concealed the remains in the blue drum, filling it with a mixture of sand, water, and cement to mask the smell of decomposition. The couple fled to Himachal Pradesh the following day, with Rastogi using Rajput's phone to send deceptive messages to his family, suggesting he was alive and away on business.
The investigation took a turn when relatives of Rajput became suspicious and visited the home on March 17, 2025. Notably, Rajput's six-year-old daughter reportedly told neighbors that her father was in the drum. This led to police intervention, where they discovered Rajput's remains after cutting open the sealed drum. Rastogi and Shukla were apprehended two days later, following a thorough investigation that traced their movements.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented a robust array of circumstantial and physical evidence. Local shopkeepers testified to selling the specific drum and other materials to the couple before the murder. Additionally, call records and mobile tower data confirmed Shukla's presence at the crime scene and tracked the couple's travel to hotels in Shimla and Manali. The post-mortem examination corroborated that Rajput had been stabbed to death, sealing the case against Rastogi and Shukla.
Looking ahead, the case raises significant questions about domestic violence and the judicial response to such extreme acts. The death sentence will likely prompt discussions on legal reforms and preventive measures to protect vulnerable individuals in similar situations.
