The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding the formation of a low-pressure area over the east-central and adjacent southeast Bay of Bengal, which is anticipated to develop into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 26, 2026. This system is expected to shift towards the north, affecting the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha.
According to the IMD's Cyclone Warning Centre in Visakhapatnam, the low-pressure area emerged around 5:30 AM on October 23, influenced by an upper-air cyclonic circulation present over the region. The IMD forecasts that the system will likely intensify into a depression by October 24, further evolving into a deep depression on October 25, and ultimately becoming a cyclonic storm by the following morning.
Prakhar Jain, Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), emphasized the likelihood of widespread rainfall due to this weather system. He urged residents and farmers to take necessary precautions and advised fishermen to return to the coast promptly. The IMD has issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rain in various districts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh starting October 27, including Alluri Sitharama Raju, Kakinada, and East Godavari.
Recent weather patterns have already resulted in significant rainfall in the Nellore and Prakasam districts, with low-lying areas experiencing waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The IMD reported that Thottambedu in Tirupati district recorded 40.2 mm of rain in a 24-hour period, indicating the system's impact is already being felt. Thunderstorms with strong winds are also predicted for the region.
Looking ahead, the IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, with varying predictions regarding the storm's intensity. Some models suggest a very severe cyclonic storm may develop, while others indicate a less intense system. Residents are advised to stay informed as the situation evolves, with updates expected in the coming days.
