Cyclone Murasu Expected to Make Landfall Near Ongole by 4 AM
As Cyclone Murasu approaches, Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district is on high alert with evacuations underway.
Cyclone Murasu is projected to make landfall between Nellore and Narasapur tonight.
Authorities have initiated evacuations to cyclone relief shelters for vulnerable communities.
The cyclone's indirect effects are expected to bring rainfall to Kerala over the weekend.
Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu is poised to impact the south coast of Andhra Pradesh, with landfall anticipated between Nellore and Narasapur during the night of November 2-3. Local authorities, particularly in Prakasam district, have heightened disaster preparedness and are executing evacuation plans for at-risk populations as the storm approaches.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the cyclone is currently located off the Andhra Pradesh coast, with wind speeds expected to reach between 100 to 120 km/h. Prakasam District Collector P Raja Babu confirmed that high tides and strong winds have already begun affecting the coastline, necessitating the relocation of vulnerable communities to designated shelters to ensure their safety.
IMD scientist Neetha K. Gopal indicated that while the cyclone poses a direct threat to Andhra Pradesh, it will also have an indirect impact on Kerala, where widespread rainfall is anticipated. She noted that while isolated heavy rainfall is possible, most areas in Kerala should expect light to moderate rain as the cyclone progresses.
The implications of Cyclone Murasu extend beyond immediate weather concerns, as thousands of residents have been moved to safety, and disaster response teams are on high alert. The Andhra Pradesh Energy Department has also activated emergency protocols to safeguard power infrastructure, anticipating potential disruptions due to the storm's impact.
Looking ahead, the cyclone is expected to cross the coast by early morning, with weather officials closely monitoring its path. The IMD has advised residents to remain indoors and heed safety advisories as the storm approaches, with significant rainfall and wind gusts likely to affect daily life in the region for the coming days.
