The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), India's largest paramilitary organization, is contemplating the reinstatement of the lance naik and naik ranks, which were eliminated three decades ago. This consideration comes as a response to ongoing delays in promotions and the need to accommodate Agniveers transitioning from the Army, as reported on October 17, 2026.

The ranks of lance naik and naik were abolished in 1997, merging them with the police ranks of constable and head constable following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Despite their removal from the CRPF, these ranks remain active within the Army. Currently, a constable in the CRPF typically waits 22 to 25 years for their first promotion, creating significant stagnation and dissatisfaction among personnel.

To address these issues, CRPF headquarters has instructed its field formations to hold stakeholder meetings, or 'Sainik Sammelans', over the next two days to gather feedback from personnel regarding the proposed changes. The intention behind reintroducing these ranks is to provide additional promotional opportunities before reaching the head constable level, thereby enhancing morale and addressing grievances related to stagnation.

The reintroduction of these ranks is also seen as a strategic move to make CRPF service more appealing to Agniveers, who are short-term military personnel recruited under the Agnipath scheme. The first batch of Agniveers is set to retire later this year, and they will be eligible to join Central Armed Police Forces, including the CRPF. Currently, there is a temporary arrangement allowing constables to wear insignia equivalent to the lance naik rank, but no provisions exist for the naik rank.

Experts, including Ranbir Singh from the Ex-Paramilitary Personnel Association, emphasize that any changes must ensure timely promotions to be effective. A senior CRPF commandant also highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline and operational efficiency within battalions, suggesting that the reintroduction of these ranks should not merely be a superficial change. As the CRPF navigates these potential reforms, the implications for personnel morale and operational dynamics remain a critical focus.
