Controversial DHS Ad Targets Indian Americans Amid Immigration Crackdown
A social media campaign by the DHS has ignited backlash for its portrayal of Indian Americans, sparking accusations of racism.

Critics label the campaign as racist and discriminatory against Indian and Sikh communities.
The initiative is part of a larger effort to address illegal immigration in the U.S.
A recent social media advertisement from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stirred significant controversy, particularly among Indian Americans. The post, which features characters from the Transformers franchise, includes a warning that reads, "self-deport or find out." This campaign has drawn sharp criticism for its use of the name "Mr. Singh," a common surname among Indians and Sikhs, leading many to label it as racist and anti-Indian.
The advertisement, shared on the platform X, depicts Optimus Prime confronting a brown-bearded character named Mr. Singh with the message, "Get off our roads, you don’t know how to drive Mr. Singh." This portrayal has been condemned by various advocacy groups, including the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) and the Sikh Coalition, who argue that it perpetuates harmful stereotypes and discrimination against these communities.
In addition to the social media post, a related video features the character Megatron discussing the release of several truck drivers, including Harjinder Singh and Rajinder Kumar, who have been involved in road incidents. The DHS's accompanying message emphasizes a defensive stance against perceived threats, stating, "If you approach this nation with hostile intent, know this. We will defend ourselves. We will defend Americanism. We will defend our home."
The backlash against the campaign highlights ongoing issues of profiling and discrimination faced by Sikhs in the United States, particularly in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Advocacy groups have expressed their outrage, with HAF calling for an investigation into the post, stating that it reflects a troubling trend of racial profiling by federal agencies. The Sikh Coalition echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that millions of Sikhs share the last name Singh, which translates to lion, and that they continue to identify proudly as Sikhs despite negative portrayals.
This controversy arises as the DHS promotes its CBP Home program, which encourages undocumented migrants to voluntarily leave the U.S. Those who register for self-deportation may receive travel assistance and a bonus of $2,600. The focus on commercial drivers in this campaign aligns with a broader crackdown on undocumented workers in the trucking industry, raising concerns about the implications for immigrant communities across the nation.
