The Congress party has intensified its demands for the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh following a resurgence of violence in the state. On October 25, 2026, Congress officials criticized the CM for his inability to maintain order, emphasizing that no armed group should receive political protection while attacking civilians.
During a press conference, Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka highlighted the urgent need for thorough investigations into violent incidents, including killings and property destruction. He referenced protests that occurred on October 23, where thousands marched towards Lok Bhavan, employing 'sound protests' reminiscent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for banging utensils during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ulaka accused the police of excessive force, including tear gas and lathi charges, to suppress these demonstrations.
Recent violence has led to significant casualties, including the deaths of three Meitei civilians on October 19 and various clashes in Kamjong district involving Kuki and Naga groups. Alka Lamba, president of the Mahila Congress, who recently visited Manipur, noted that women continue to suffer from the ongoing conflict, asserting that the BJP-led government has failed to curb the violence.
Ulaka further claimed that armed groups in the region are better equipped than security forces, with approximately 300 fatalities and nearly 60,000 individuals displaced since May 2023. He emphasized the need for immediate civilian protection, strict adherence to operational guidelines, and a comprehensive plan for the rehabilitation of displaced persons.
In light of the ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has escalated since May 2023, Congress is advocating for the dissolution of the current Assembly and the organization of fresh elections. They are also calling for intervention from the Union government to facilitate an inclusive peace process and restore stability in the region.
