Violence erupted in Thoubal district of Manipur on Sunday night, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to several others. The clashes occurred between two communities in Khangabok village, approximately 25 kilometers south of Imphal, during a concert. Police reported that tensions escalated when stones were thrown, leading to retaliatory actions and the burning of houses and vehicles in the area.
The deceased has been identified as Laishram Rakesh, who was shot in the head by unidentified assailants during the altercation. He was transported to a nearby hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. In addition to the fatality, several individuals sustained minor injuries from stone-throwing and were treated at local medical facilities.
In response to the violence, district authorities imposed prohibitory orders restricting movement in Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham. The orders were enacted under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which allows for temporary restrictions to prevent public disturbances. The district magistrate noted the potential for further unrest and emphasized the need for these measures to ensure public safety.
Additional state and central security forces have been deployed to the affected villages to restore order. As of Monday morning, police confirmed that the situation was under control, although tensions remained high. The authorities have not specified when the prohibitory orders would be lifted, indicating ongoing concerns about public safety in the region.
Looking ahead, the local administration is closely monitoring the situation, and further measures may be taken if necessary. Community leaders are urged to promote peace and dialogue to prevent further escalation of violence in the area.
