Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has announced his willingness to face arrest as he prepares for protests scheduled in Delhi and Mumbai. He stated that he is ready to go to jail for waving the national flag, amidst claims of police surveillance and intimidation. Dipke's comments came just before the 'Lehra Do Tiranga' protests, which are aimed at addressing alleged electoral irregularities.
The backdrop to this situation includes recent arrests of CJP members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were detained for trespassing at Jantar Mantar while demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Dipke emphasized that their protests are not aimed at changing the regime but rather to call for a new, unbiased election commissioner. He criticized the current administration for ignoring their demands.
In response to the planned protests, the CJP has urged supporters to gather at Central Park in Connaught Place at 5 PM today. However, the New Delhi Municipal Council has announced that the park will be closed for the duration of the protests. Dipke questioned the logic behind shutting down public spaces, suggesting that if they were to announce protests at multiple locations, would all those areas also be closed?
To maintain order during the protests, the Delhi Police have deployed around 6,000 personnel, including paramilitary forces, to Connaught Place. Officials have warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who violates the law. The police have also indicated that only a small group of 11 individuals will be allowed to carry the national flag and sing the national anthem in Central Park, under prohibitory orders currently in effect.
In addition to the Delhi protests, a similar demonstration is planned at Mumbai's Azad Maidan, where the police have granted permission for the event. This protest is intended to show solidarity with the detained CJP leaders. As the situation unfolds, both cities are bracing for significant public gatherings, with authorities on high alert to manage potential disruptions.
