Authorities have restricted Jantar Mantar as a protest venue, prompting widespread demonstrations.
Leaders from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were taken into custody early Tuesday morning after they breached security at Jantar Mantar, a well-known protest location in Delhi. The group was protesting against the recent changes to the electoral rolls, which they argue disproportionately benefit the ruling party. Videos shared by party founder Abhijeet Dipke showed members Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das being escorted away by police while chanting slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protests have been escalating in recent days, with demonstrators voicing their discontent over the electoral roll revisions that have led to the removal of millions of names. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have also expressed their outrage, claiming that the changes could disenfranchise eligible voters. The Election Commission has defended its actions, stating that the decisions were made unanimously, despite concerns raised by other election commissioners.
The situation intensified when the federal home ministry announced that Jantar Mantar would no longer serve as a designated protest site, instead offering three alternative locations that require prior permission for demonstrations. This decision came shortly after CJP leaders sought permission for a peaceful protest at the site. Ranka highlighted the timing of the announcement, suggesting it was a direct response to their request.
The implications of these protests extend beyond the immediate detentions. The CJP has emerged as a significant voice for youth discontent in India, evolving from an online satire group into a pressure organization advocating for accountability and reform. The recent protests follow earlier student-led demonstrations that resulted in the resignation of the federal Education Minister, indicating a growing trend of activism among young people in India.
Looking ahead, the CJP plans to continue its demonstrations, despite the increased police presence and restrictions on protests in the capital. The group has vowed to persist in their demands for electoral reform and accountability from the government, signaling that the current wave of protests may not subside anytime soon.
