On October 11, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially launch the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail, marking a significant milestone in the city's public transport development. The inaugural ride will take place around 11:30 a.m., with PM Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay among the first passengers traveling from Poonamallee to Porur Bypass.
The Phase 2 network, which spans 118.9 kilometers, has been under construction for nearly six years. The first operational segment will connect Poonamallee to Vadapalani, covering a distance of 15 kilometers. Following the flag-off ceremony, the metro line will be fully inaugurated alongside various other projects at IIT-Madras by 2 p.m., with public access to the new stretch commencing around 4 p.m.
Initially, the metro service will run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., a change from the Phase 1 schedule of 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. This adjustment is intended to facilitate ongoing construction work at several stations, including Alapakkam, Karambakkam, and Valasaravakkam, which will be conducted during nighttime hours. During peak hours, commuters can expect a train every 10 minutes, while non-peak hours will see a train every 15 minutes.
The introduction of this metro line is expected to significantly improve public transport in Chennai, reducing travel times and easing congestion on the roads. The completion of the Phase 2 network is anticipated to enhance connectivity across the city, providing residents with a reliable and efficient mode of transportation.
Looking ahead, as construction progresses and the civil work at the six stations is completed, the frequency of train services is expected to increase, further benefiting commuters in the region. The successful launch of this project marks a crucial step in Chennai's urban transport evolution.
