Binance Commits $6.3 Billion to Cover Hacking Losses
In a significant move, Binance's APAC head confirms the exchange will use its own assets to address the recent $6.3 billion hacking incident.
Binance has recovered 90% of the stolen assets following a major hack.
The FBI attributes the theft to the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor.
The Binance Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) offers an insurance net of approximately $1.2 billion.
On November 1, Binance's Asia Pacific head, SB Seker, announced the exchange's commitment to cover losses from a recent hacking incident amounting to $6.3 billion. This statement came during the India Blockchain Week in Mumbai, just 48 hours after the breach. Seker emphasized that Binance will utilize its own assets to backstop the incident, demonstrating the company's dedication to its users.
The hacking event has been described as the largest theft in cryptocurrency history. Binance has managed to recover 90% of the stolen assets, with the remaining 10% being sourced from illiquid assets through open market transactions, metacoins, and other exchanges. Seker noted that Tether and Circle have successfully frozen significant portions of the stolen assets, contributing to a total of nearly $3 billion in secured funds.
The Binance Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) is currently providing an insurance safety net valued between $1.17 billion and $1.2 billion. Seker reassured stakeholders of Binance's transparency and accountability, stating that the exchange has opened withdrawals within the promised 48-hour timeframe and has been actively updating users through social media.
The FBI has confirmed that the hacking incident was executed by the North Korean group TraderTraitor, which primarily converted the stolen assets into Ethereum. Seker highlighted that over half of the stolen assets, approximately $3.3 billion, have been recovered through partnerships, underscoring the collaborative nature of security in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Looking ahead, Binance is focused on replenishing the remaining stolen assets and enhancing its security measures. The exchange aims to maintain its leadership position in the cryptocurrency market while ensuring the safety and trust of its users in the wake of this unprecedented incident.
