Opposition parties demand immediate action from authorities amid rising concerns over religious intolerance.
In a disturbing incident reported from Paschim Medinipur district in West Bengal, a Christian woman has alleged that members of the Bajrang Dal assaulted her and forcibly bathed her in a so-called 'purification' ritual. This incident occurred during the Durga Puja festival on October 18, as the group attempted to coerce her family and two others into converting to Hinduism.
The complainant detailed that the three families were threatened with severe violence, including being 'burnt alive' if they approached the police. Despite her call to law enforcement, the families faced ongoing intimidation from the group for two days, culminating in their forced attendance at a Durga Puja pandal in a nearby village where they were compelled to participate in religious rites against their will.
Following the incident, police in Chandrakona registered a First Information Report (FIR) on October 20, charging at least 13 individuals under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempted murder and related crimes. As of October 24, no arrests had been made, prompting criticism from opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress and the Congress party, who have called for swift action from the authorities. The Superintendent of Police, Papiya Sultana, has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the case.
The victim's allegations extend beyond her personal ordeal, as she reported that other women in her community were also threatened. One of the accused allegedly made sexual threats towards her 16-year-old daughter, while another girl was reportedly choked in a violent confrontation. The FIR indicates that the group also stole Rs 20,000 from one of the homes during the assault.
The implications of this incident are significant, highlighting rising tensions surrounding religious identity in West Bengal. The Congress party has formally urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take immediate action against the accused. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress representatives have expressed concerns over the safety of Christians in the region, claiming that there is a systematic campaign of intimidation against them, including threats to civic rights and vandalism of churches. As the situation develops, the community remains on high alert, seeking protection and justice from the authorities.
