A man in Bangladesh, Wahiduzzaman Shamim, has died following two violent assaults by a mob over alleged remarks deemed offensive to religious sentiments. The initial attack took place in Debhata upazila, where local residents detained and beat Shamim. Police intervened around 4:30 PM on Tuesday, rescuing him and transporting him to the Debhata Upazila Health Complex for treatment. However, the violence escalated when a large group stormed the hospital later that evening.

Despite police presence and objections from medical staff, approximately 200 to 250 individuals broke into Shamim's hospital ward around 8:40 PM. They forcibly removed him from his bed and assaulted him again in front of other patients. Following the brutal second attack, Shamim's condition deteriorated, necessitating his transfer to Satkhira Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 1 AM on Wednesday.

The violence was reportedly sparked by an audio clip circulating on social media, which contained remarks attributed to Shamim that were considered disrespectful towards the Prophet Muhammad. This incited local outrage, leading to the mob's initial attack and subsequent hospital assault. Videos of the incident circulated online, showing the chaotic scenes as people gathered around Shamim, some recording the events on their phones.

Shamim's family expressed concern over his mental state leading up to the incident, noting a significant change in his behavior after a traumatic experience a year prior, where he was reportedly drugged and robbed. His brother, Abdul Jalil, mentioned that Shamim had attempted suicide by ingesting poison on the day of the attacks, indicating he was under severe distress amid threats from the community.

In the aftermath, local police stated that they had regained control of the situation at the hospital but noted that no formal complaint had been filed by Shamim's family. Officer HM Shaheen indicated that any legal action would depend on the submission of a complaint. As of now, it remains unclear if any arrests have been made in connection with the assaults that led to Shamim's death.
