Saudi Arabia's government has warned of consequences for the Houthis following these repeated attacks.
A ballistic missile targeted the administrative headquarters of Saudi Aramco in Dhahran on Tuesday night, resulting in a limited fire but fortunately no reported casualties. This incident is part of a broader escalation in hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels from Yemen, with the Saudi state news agency SPA confirming the attack.
The missile struck an office tower within the Aramco complex, damaging the upper three floors. According to a company source, the building caught fire as a result of the impact. The complex is crucial for Aramco, the world's largest oil producer, which manages an extensive network of oil rigs, pipelines, and refineries vital to the Saudi economy.
In response to the missile threat, the Saudi-led coalition reported that fragments from an intercepted missile fell in a residential area of Dhahran. Additionally, the coalition successfully intercepted other missiles and drones targeting Riyadh and southern regions of the kingdom. Saudi Arabia's cabinet, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, issued a stern warning to the Houthis, indicating that they would face repercussions for their ongoing attacks.
The recent missile strike is part of a series of assaults by the Houthis, including a significant attack on Riyadh airport that resulted in 13 fatalities, marking one of the deadliest incidents in Saudi Arabia in a decade. The Houthis have threatened further retaliation against Saudi targets, including Aramco facilities, as tensions continue to rise in the region.
As the conflict escalates, Saudi Arabia is seeking increased support from its allies to counter the Houthi missile and drone threats. The United States, a key ally, has refrained from direct involvement in the conflict. Meanwhile, Iran has offered to mediate between the warring parties, a significant gesture given its backing of the Houthis and ongoing regional rivalries.
