On Thursday, Bali experienced significant unrest as hundreds of residents protested a severe petrol shortage that has left many stranded in long queues at gas stations. The situation escalated in the provincial capital, Denpasar, where lines stretched over a kilometer, prompting around 500 individuals to gather outside the governor's office to voice their frustrations.

The shortages have been attributed to supply chain disruptions, particularly delays in fuel distribution after a tanker encountered issues while unloading its cargo. This tanker, which arrived on Tuesday carrying over 22 million liters of fuel, was expected to alleviate the situation for up to a week, according to Governor I Wayan Koster. Despite these assurances, many residents expressed dissatisfaction with the government's response to the crisis.

Protesters shared their experiences, with some, like university student Adolf Alfino, stating they waited between four to eight hours for fuel. Another protester, Ibram Syahbani, expressed disappointment over the government's inability to resolve the issue promptly, highlighting the impact on his family. In response to the crisis, Governor Koster ordered government employees to work from home for three days and shifted schools and universities to online learning.

This fuel crisis is part of a broader challenge Indonesia has faced this year, exacerbated by the ongoing Iran war, which has disrupted global energy supplies. Earlier this year, Jakarta implemented measures to limit fuel purchases and mandated civil servants to work from home on Fridays to conserve energy.

Looking ahead, the local government is under pressure to stabilize the situation and restore normalcy. Residents are hopeful for a swift resolution as they continue to deal with the inconvenience and uncertainty surrounding fuel availability.
