Assistant Sub-Inspector Shot Dead in Tarn Taran, Punjab
An ASI was fatally shot in Tarn Taran district, marking the fifth police killing in Punjab this year.
Iqbal Singh, an ASI, was shot dead by unidentified assailants while returning home.
This incident is part of a troubling trend, with four police officers killed in Punjab in 2023.
A social media post attributed to gangsters claimed responsibility for the murder.
An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) named Iqbal Singh was shot dead on Sunday evening in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, while returning home after duty. The incident occurred around 6 PM on Lauhka Road, where unidentified gunmen ambushed him, resulting in multiple gunshot wounds that proved fatal. Singh was a resident of Naushera Pannuan village, under the jurisdiction of the Sarhali police station.
This tragic event marks the fifth killing of police personnel in Punjab this year, highlighting a concerning trend of violence against law enforcement. Earlier this year, four other policemen have lost their lives in separate incidents, raising alarms about the safety of officers in the region. Notably, ASI Harjit Singh was shot dead during duty in Amritsar in September, and ASI Joga Singh was killed in Majitha in May.
Following the shooting, senior police officials, including DIG Sneh Sharma and Tarn Taran SSP Surinder Lamba, arrived at the scene to initiate an investigation. The police are currently working to identify the attackers and understand the motive behind this brazen act of violence. However, the investigation is complicated by a social media post that surfaced shortly after the incident, allegedly from foreign-based gangsters. This post claimed that Singh had been assisting a gangster-turned-terrorist, Lakhbir Singh, also known as Landa Harike.
The gangsters, named in the post, denied involvement in another recent murder of a local leader, Ashwani Sarpanch, asserting that they were being wrongfully implicated. The police have not yet verified the authenticity of this claim, which adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation. The rise in violence against police personnel has raised concerns among the public and law enforcement agencies alike.
As investigations continue, authorities are under pressure to enhance security measures for police officers and address the escalating violence in Punjab. The situation remains tense, with the community calling for swift action to ensure the safety of law enforcement and restore public confidence in the police force.
