Protests have erupted against the appointment of Dushyant Kumar Gautam amid ongoing investigations.
The three convicted individuals received life sentences for their roles in Bhandari's murder.
The Ankita Bhandari murder case has returned to the forefront of national attention following protests at India Gate, where opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, joined Bhandari's parents in demanding justice. The protests were sparked by the recent appointment of Dushyant Kumar Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim, which Bhandari's family argues should be postponed until the ongoing CBI investigation into the case concludes.
Ankita Bhandari, a 19-year-old receptionist at the Vanantara Resort in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, went missing in September 2022. Her body was discovered in a canal five days later, leading to the arrest of the resort's owner, Pulkit Arya, along with manager Saurabh Bhaskar and assistant manager Ankit Gupta. The accused confessed to pushing her into the canal after she allegedly refused to provide “special services” to guests, igniting widespread protests in Uttarakhand due to the involvement of a prominent political family.
The police filed a comprehensive 500-page chargesheet, detailing the circumstances surrounding Bhandari's murder. The document indicated that she was coerced into providing services to VIP guests, leading to a confrontation with the accused. The case has drawn significant media attention, particularly due to the political connections of Pulkit Arya, whose father was a BJP leader. The trial concluded in May 2025, with all three men found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment along with fines.
The implications of this case extend beyond the courtroom, as it has raised questions about political accountability and the safety of women in India. The protests at India Gate reflect a growing public demand for justice and transparency in the investigation, particularly concerning the alleged involvement of Gautam as a VIP in the case. Activists and community members have expressed outrage over the perceived attempts to shield Gautam from scrutiny, arguing that such actions undermine the integrity of the judicial process.
Looking ahead, the situation remains tense as Bhandari's family continues to push for justice. They have issued a 24-hour ultimatum regarding Gautam's appointment, and the CBI investigation is expected to intensify. The outcome of these developments could significantly impact public trust in political institutions and the ongoing discourse surrounding women's safety in India.
