Israeli officials suspect co-pilot's actions may be linked to radical indoctrination.
An Al Qaeda-affiliated publication has issued a call for attacks on aircraft transporting American and Israeli passengers, drawing parallels to the September 11 attacks and a recent incident involving flydubai Flight FZ1073. This appeal was disseminated through Telegram channels associated with Al Qaeda and was reported by the New York Post.
The publication, known as al-Bayan, was launched in July and has gained attention for its provocative content. It specifically referenced the September 30 incident where the flydubai flight, carrying over 170 passengers, faced a severe crisis mid-flight. The article urged followers to target flights with American and Israeli passengers, framing these actions as part of an ongoing conflict.
The flydubai incident involved the co-pilot allegedly attacking the captain, resulting in the aircraft making two sharp descents while flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The crew issued distress signals, and the plane was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after losing significant altitude. Passengers intervened to subdue the co-pilot, and two off-duty pilots helped land the aircraft safely.
The UAE's prosecutor general has labeled the flydubai incident an attempted terrorist attack, although the motive remains unclear. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested that the co-pilot had been radicalized and was suicidal, but no substantial evidence has been provided to support this claim. Investigations are ongoing, with both UAE and Saudi authorities involved in determining the co-pilot's potential connections.
As investigations continue, the implications of the Al Qaeda publication raise concerns about future threats to aviation security. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any potential copycat attacks and to understand the broader context of the co-pilot's actions during the flydubai flight incident.
