In a significant development, the Union Cabinet has approved a two-year extension for Agniveers, as announced by Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani on November 4, 2026. This decision allows the remaining Agniveers to serve for an additional period, enhancing their chances of being inducted into the armed forces based on merit.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced in 2022, aimed to recruit young individuals aged between 17.5 to 23 years into the military for a short-term engagement. Under the revised plan, 25% of Agniveers will be enrolled into the armed forces after completing four years of service. The remaining 75% will now have the opportunity to extend their engagement by two years, after which they too can join the forces, contingent upon meeting specific selection criteria.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that this decision provides all willing Agniveers a chance to become regular soldiers after their tenure of four or six years, provided they satisfy the selection requirements. In a statement on social media, Singh expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the extension, highlighting its significance in the ongoing structural reforms of India's defence forces.

The CDS noted that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize the military, aiming to create a younger, fitter, and technologically advanced force ready for future challenges. Currently, there are approximately 300,000 Agniveers serving in the defence forces, and this extension is expected to enhance the operational capabilities of the military.

Looking ahead, the implementation of this extended engagement period is anticipated to take effect soon, with further details on the selection criteria for the transition to regular forces expected to be released in the coming weeks. This move is seen as a pivotal step in reshaping the future of India's armed forces, aligning with the evolving nature of warfare.
