In a significant escalation of hostilities, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that over 600,000 residents across Ukraine are currently without electricity due to recent Russian missile and drone attacks. The strikes occurred overnight, primarily affecting critical energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the northeastern city of Kharkiv, leading to at least three fatalities and 21 injuries, as reported by Ukraine's state emergencies service.
This latest wave of attacks comes despite claims from former US President Donald Trump that an 'energy ceasefire' was established between Russia and Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is prepared to cease its strikes on Russian energy facilities if Moscow reciprocates. However, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed the idea of a ceasefire, arguing that Ukraine does not merit such a pause and suggesting that it would allow Europe to continue supplying Ukraine with arms.
The Russian defense ministry stated that their 'massive' strikes were aimed at communications and energy facilities utilized by Ukraine's military in the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions. In response, Ukraine's air force reported that Russian forces launched 39 ballistic and cruise missiles along with 128 drones, managing to intercept four missiles and 115 drones during the assault.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in Russia controlling approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. The impact of these strikes is profound, not only causing immediate power outages but also raising concerns about the resilience of Ukraine's energy infrastructure amid continuous military aggression.
Looking ahead, the situation remains tense as both sides continue to engage in military operations. The international community is closely monitoring developments, and further escalations could lead to more severe humanitarian consequences for the Ukrainian population.
