A devastating earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Tibet late Thursday, October 22, 2026, leading to the tragic loss of 16 lives and injuring 32 others, according to reports from the state news agency Xinhua. The quake occurred at 10:33 p.m. local time, with its epicenter situated approximately 190 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu and 390 kilometers northeast of Lhasa, as per the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which contributed to the significant impact felt in the region. Local authorities have reported that the quake was distinctly felt within the township office of Maru, where cracks appeared in the walls. The tremors also caused structural damage, with several houses collapsing in the vicinity, raising concerns about the safety of residents.
In response to the disaster, a level-II emergency protocol was activated, mobilizing resources to assist affected areas. Power and telecommunications services were interrupted in the county seat, complicating rescue and recovery efforts. Local officials are currently assessing the damage in nearby villages and coordinating with emergency workers dispatched to the region.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in China, particularly in the Tibetan region. A previous significant earthquake in January 2025 resulted in the deaths of at least 126 individuals in Tingri county, highlighting the ongoing seismic risks faced by communities in this area. The recent quake has reignited discussions about preparedness and response strategies for natural disasters in Tibet.
Looking ahead, local authorities are focused on recovery efforts and ensuring the safety of residents. Further assessments will be conducted to determine the full extent of the damage, and additional support may be required as the situation develops. The community is urged to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur in the coming days.
