In a notable incident during the Duleep Trophy final, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi lost his wicket shortly after being playfully sledged by South Zone captain Tilak Varma. The match took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where Sooryavanshi had started strong, scoring 44 runs before his dismissal.
Sooryavanshi, who serves as the vice-captain for the East Zone, showcased impressive batting skills, particularly against seasoned pacer Mohammed Siraj. He aggressively targeted Siraj, hitting multiple boundaries and a six, which led to Siraj being removed from the bowling attack. However, as he approached a potential century, Sooryavanshi fell to Chama V Milind, marking another missed opportunity after narrowly missing out on a century in the semi-final.
The sledging incident occurred as Varma opened the field, allowing Sooryavanshi to score freely. Varma was caught on the stump mic humorously questioning, “Kya yaar ye vice-captain?” (What is this vice-captain?), which added a light-hearted atmosphere to the game. The two players were seen sharing laughs, indicating a friendly rivalry on the field.
In contrast, Abhimanyu Easwaran, another East Zone batter, outperformed Sooryavanshi, reaching his half-century first. Easwaran's consistent performance helped stabilize the innings, as the duo had previously built a solid partnership of 100 runs for the first wicket. Sooryavanshi's earlier performance in the semi-final, where he scored 92, had already established him as a promising talent in the tournament.
The East Zone, led by captain Ishan Kishan, won the toss and chose to bat first, making one change to their lineup. The South Zone, on the other hand, made four adjustments, including the inclusion of Devdutt Padikkal and Mohammed Siraj. As the final progresses, both teams are keen to secure a victory, with Sooryavanshi's performance under close scrutiny as he prepares for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan.
