During a recent meeting at his official residence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on educators to tackle the rising concerns of excessive screen time and drug addiction among students. This gathering, held on September 4, 2026, included 82 National Award-winning teachers who shared their experiences and innovative teaching strategies aimed at enhancing student engagement.
Modi emphasized the critical role teachers play in nurturing children's natural curiosity and preserving their innocence. He noted the changing family dynamics, particularly the decline of traditional joint families, which has increased the reliance on teachers for guidance and support in children's lives. The Prime Minister urged educators to be vigilant regarding behavioral changes in students, particularly concerning substance use, and to provide assistance to those facing addiction challenges.
The Prime Minister pointed out that excessive screen time has emerged as a significant issue in modern education. He encouraged teachers to communicate with parents about their children's screen habits, particularly late-night mobile phone usage. Modi suggested that fostering interests in sports and creative activities could help students reduce their screen time and engage more actively in their physical and mental development.
In his address, Modi referenced the National Education Policy, highlighting the necessity of connecting classroom learning with real-world skills. He urged teachers to extend their teaching beyond the syllabus and instill values such as the dignity of labor in their students. This holistic approach aims to prepare children not just academically but also socially and ethically for the future.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister's call to action emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts between teachers, parents, and the community to create a supportive environment for children. Upcoming initiatives may include workshops and training sessions aimed at equipping educators with the tools to address these pressing issues effectively.
