India and Canada Set to Strengthen Economic Ties with Investment Treaty Talks

India has signaled its intent to initiate discussions with Canada regarding a Bilateral Investment Treaty, aiming to enhance economic collaboration and boost bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion (approximately INR 4.65 lakh crore) by 2030. This announcement was made during the inaugural Canada-India Finance Ministers' Economic and Financial Dialogue, where Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met her Canadian counterpart, Francois-Philippe Champagne.

The ministers explored various avenues for strengthening trade relations and agreed on several areas for economic cooperation. A Bilateral Investment Treaty is crucial as it offers protections and assurances to investors from both nations. This dialogue follows a commitment made by the Prime Ministers of both countries to bolster economic ties, with a goal of finalizing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of 2026.

Trade Goals and Financial Cooperation: Sitharaman and Champagne reaffirmed their ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion by 2030. They also discussed enhancing investment opportunities and simplifying processes for financial institutions. The talks included significant topics such as financial technology, cross-border payments, and the potential integration of India's Unified Payments Interface with Canadian payment systems. Furthermore, both nations recognized the importance of strategic cooperation in critical minerals essential for various industries. The ongoing discussions reflect a growing momentum in India-Canada economic relations, with a focus on achieving tangible outcomes in the near future.
