In a significant development, the Maharashtra government has formed an inquiry committee to investigate alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) recruitment process. Senior IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe has been appointed as the secretary of this committee. This announcement led to the cessation of protests by aspiring candidates who had been demonstrating for ten days at SM Joshi Bridge in Pune.

The protests were initiated due to claims of misconduct within the MPSC, with candidates demanding accountability and transparency in the recruitment process. A government delegation, led by Minister Shivendra Raje Bhosale, met with the protesters and conveyed that many of their demands had been accepted. However, key issues remain, including the call for the resignation of MPSC chairman Vivek Bhimanwar, who subsequently announced his leave until the inquiry concludes.

During the discussions, Bhosale confirmed that the government would also address other demands from the aspirants, such as the withdrawal of legal cases against some protest representatives and the recruitment of 70,000 candidates over the next three years. Additionally, there is a push to increase vacancies for the upcoming Group C examination scheduled for January. The protesters also requested background checks on the MPSC chairman and secretary prior to their appointments.

The inquiry committee will be chaired by former judge Dilip Bhosale and will include notable members such as IPS officer Laxmi Gautam, former IAS officer Ganesh Patil, and retired judge P.D. Naik. The establishment of this committee aims to restore faith in the recruitment process and address the concerns raised by the aspirants regarding the integrity of the MPSC.

Looking ahead, the inquiry is expected to commence soon, with the committee tasked to thoroughly investigate the allegations of irregularities. The outcome of this inquiry could lead to significant changes within the MPSC and impact future recruitment processes in Maharashtra.
