In a devastating incident on October 17, three people were killed and three others injured when a tempo plunged nearly 100 feet into a gorge in Nanded district, Maharashtra. The accident occurred around 5 am on Friday while the vehicle was navigating a sharp turn on the Keroli Ghat road, according to local police reports.

The tempo was transporting pilgrims from Yavatmal who were returning from a temple visit in Mahur, coinciding with the ongoing Navratri festival. The victims, employed at a local furniture shop, were on their way back when the tragedy struck. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the tempo was descending the ghat when it encountered an oncoming vehicle traveling at high speed on the wrong side of the road, which reportedly blinded the driver with its headlights.

As the tempo driver attempted to avoid a collision, the lack of a protective barrier at the bend led to a loss of control, resulting in the vehicle tumbling into the gorge. The three victims, Babarao Dnyanoba Tekam (60), Rahul Sudhakarrao Thakre (25), and Pritam Ramrao Pradhan (38), were seated in the open cargo area and were ejected from the vehicle as it fell. Thakre and Pradhan died at the scene, while Tekam succumbed to injuries later in the hospital.

The driver, Pratik Arvind Adkine (26), along with two others seated in the cabin, sustained minor injuries but are reported to be in stable condition. Rescue operations involved the use of ropes and a crane to extricate the tempo and the victims from the gorge, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the area.

This tragic event raises significant concerns regarding road safety in Maharashtra, particularly on ghat roads known for their treacherous conditions. Authorities may need to reevaluate safety protocols and implement stronger barriers to prevent similar accidents in the future. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
