The Ridge House, a sprawling 5,500-square-foot holiday home, is situated in Poladpur, Maharashtra, at the base of the Sahyadri mountains. This retreat, enveloped by a six-acre mango and cashew orchard, was conceived as a sanctuary for a family seeking to reconnect after the passing of their patriarch. The tranquil setting offers a stark contrast to the hustle of urban life, providing a space for meaningful interactions and shared experiences among family members.
The inspiration for this home emerged from the family's desire to gather in a location that could accommodate four generations. Poladpur, a quaint village, was chosen for its scenic beauty and accessibility. The Architecture Company (TAC), based in Mumbai, was tasked with bringing this vision to life. According to partner Rohit Walimbe, the design aims to create a dedicated space where family and friends can reconnect with their roots and strengthen their bonds.
Strategically positioned on a narrow ridge, The Ridge House benefits from natural breezes that mitigate the summer heat, which can reach up to 45°C. The design features two interconnected blocks, allowing for airflow throughout the living areas and bedrooms. Constructed using reinforced concrete and steel, the house incorporates local materials and maintains the integrity of the surrounding landscape, with minimal disruption to the existing greenery during construction.
The interior of the home is designed to foster interaction, featuring a spacious living room with high ceilings, a dining area for ten, and various outdoor spaces for gatherings. A striking staircase made from teak and black granite serves as a focal point, leading to the primary bedroom. The dining area showcases a custom-built teak table, reflecting a mid-century design aesthetic. The kitchen is airy and inviting, designed for family meals while offering views of the lush surroundings.
The bedrooms are oriented to capture stunning views and provide a peaceful retreat. Each room is thoughtfully designed, with features like a freestanding bathtub overlooking the plantation. The Ridge House stands as a testament to the family's commitment to togetherness, offering a harmonious blend of comfort, nature, and modern design, making it an ideal gathering place for family members from around the world.
