On Saturday, Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule expressed deep concern over the severe drought conditions in Maharashtra, criticizing the state government for neglecting opposition proposals and failing to deliver on its commitments to farmers. Speaking in Pune, Sule emphasized that the party, led by Sharad Pawar, is not looking to politicize the crisis but is eager to collaborate with the government to address the urgent needs of the agricultural community.

Sule pointed out that despite the government's recent announcement of ₹5,000 in advance assistance for affected farmers, this falls short of the much larger promise of ₹1 lakh per hectare made earlier. She stated that the government has failed to fulfill any of its financial commitments to farmers, despite having pledged more substantial aid under various schemes. "We demand that this promise be fulfilled," Sule insisted, highlighting the lack of disbursement of funds that were supposed to support farmers during this critical time.

In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the government's actions, stating that the advance payment of ₹5,000 is an unprecedented measure aimed at providing immediate relief. He compared Maharashtra's assistance to that of Karnataka, which only offered ₹2,500 despite facing similar drought challenges. Fadnavis acknowledged the hardships faced by farmers but argued that this assistance would provide some level of relief, marking a significant improvement over past aid measures.

Fadnavis also addressed criticisms from opposition leaders, recalling their negative reactions to previous financial assistance programs, such as the Ladki Bahin scheme. He suggested that those who criticize the government's efforts often do not understand the realities faced by farmers. "Leaders who live in huge bungalows and travel in expensive cars will never understand the value of ₹5,000," he remarked, reiterating the importance of the aid provided.

As the drought situation escalates, with Maharashtra now declaring drought in 305 talukas, the need for effective government response and support for farmers has become increasingly urgent. The state faces pressure to not only meet its financial promises but also to implement comprehensive strategies to alleviate the ongoing crisis and support the agricultural sector moving forward.
