On October 22, a significant incident involving stone-pelting erupted during the Durga idol immersion procession in Washim, Maharashtra. The altercation occurred near Tipu Sultan Chowk, where tensions flared as the procession passed by residences of a specific community. This event coincided with Vijayadashami, a major festival marking the end of Durga Puja.
According to Ramkrishna Pawar, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Washim, the conflict began when individuals from the community raised objections to the throwing of Gulal, a colored powder traditionally used during celebrations. This led to a heated argument between members of both communities, resulting in minor stone-pelting incidents from both sides.
Pawar confirmed that while there were exchanges of stones, no significant damage or vandalism was reported. The police quickly intervened to impose a curfew and restore order. The officer emphasized that the situation was brought under control without any major incidents of violence or property damage. Currently, the process of filing First Information Reports (FIRs) related to the altercation is underway.
In response to the unrest, police forces, including the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and Rapid Action Force (RAF), have been deployed to the area to ensure safety and maintain peace. The local authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further escalation.
As investigations continue, officials are gathering more information regarding the incident. The community members are urged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as they work to resolve the matter peacefully.
