In a heartbreaking incident, a 37-year-old jawan of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) lost his life after being bitten by a venomous snake at a camp in Regadi, Gadchiroli district, on Tuesday evening. The deceased, identified as Police Naik Rahul Prabhakar Shingare, was part of the 'F' Company of SRPF Group No. 6, stationed in Dhule, and had been deployed in anti-Maoist operations for approximately six weeks.
Shingare was reportedly bathing near a large water tank at the camp around 11 AM when the snake struck him on the hand. Immediate action was taken by his fellow officers, who transported him to Chamorshi Rural Hospital, located about 40 kilometers away. However, as his condition worsened, he was transferred to the District General Hospital in Gadchiroli, where he ultimately passed away despite the medical team's efforts.
Interestingly, Shingare was also known for his skills as a snake charmer and had a reputation for rescuing snakes. His death has left a significant impact on his colleagues and the local community, prompting a formal salute in his memory. According to Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police M Ramesh, a condolence salute was conducted at the police drill ground, where three rounds were fired in the air as a mark of respect.
In a separate operation on the same day, police and security forces in Gadchiroli uncovered and destroyed a substantial cache of weapons, explosives, and Maoist materials in the Koparshi forest area, located near the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border. The seized items included a .303 rifle, two single-shot rifles, two country-made pistols, a Barrel Grenade Launcher, live cartridges, detonators, walkie-talkies, and Maoist literature, indicating ongoing security challenges in the region.
Looking ahead, the SRPF and local law enforcement agencies are expected to continue their operations in Gadchiroli, focusing on both anti-Maoist efforts and ensuring the safety of personnel in the field. The tragic loss of Shingare serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by security forces in their line of duty.
