Interim aid of Rs 5,000 announced for farmers.
In a significant decision, Raj Thackeray, the leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), has announced the cancellation of this year's Dipotsav, the party's annual Diwali celebration, due to the severe drought affecting the state. The event, typically held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, has been a major attraction, drawing thousands of attendees each year.
Thackeray made the announcement through a video message, emphasizing the need for sensitivity towards the ongoing drought crisis in Maharashtra. He urged citizens to reconsider extravagant celebrations while many farmers are struggling financially due to the adverse weather conditions. The MNS leader highlighted that celebrating Diwali in a lavish manner is inappropriate when rural areas are suffering.
The Maharashtra government has officially declared that 85 percent of the state is currently experiencing drought conditions, a situation exacerbated by insufficient rainfall in 2026. In response to the crisis, the government has also introduced interim financial assistance of Rs 5,000 for farmers, aiming to alleviate some of the economic pressures they face ahead of the festival.
The cancellation of the Dipotsav marks a notable shift in the party's approach to community celebrations, reflecting a growing awareness of the socio-economic challenges posed by the drought. The event is known for its vibrant decorations and spectacular firework displays, making its absence felt in the festive atmosphere of Mumbai.
Looking ahead, Thackeray expressed hope that if the drought situation improves, the MNS will consider reinstating the Dipotsav next year. He called on the public to be mindful of water usage during the Diwali festivities, reinforcing the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis.
