In a recent statement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply criticized the Maharashtra government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for its treatment of tribal students protesting in Mumbai. The students, who traveled from various regions, were advocating for essential facilities and scholarships in their residential schools, which they claim have been overlooked by the state administration.
Gandhi's remarks came after reports surfaced of police action against the students who had sought refuge in the Congress office, Tilak Bhavan, in Dadar. He highlighted the plight of these students, many of whom had traveled long distances, including from Nashik, only to find themselves without accommodation. The Congress leader expressed outrage over the police's preemptive action to detain the students before their planned demonstration at Azad Maidan could commence.
The demands of the protesting tribal students were straightforward: they sought basic amenities in their educational institutions, including scholarships that they believe are their rightful entitlement. Gandhi emphasized that the government’s indifference to these issues has led to the current unrest among the youth. He also extended his support to the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) aspirants, who are protesting for the removal of the MPSC chairman, stating that their grievances have been ignored for too long.
Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal condemned the police's actions, labeling them as illegal and a misuse of authority. He questioned whether the protesting students were being treated as criminals for voicing their demands. Other Congress leaders, including Varsha Gaikwad and Bhai Jagtap, echoed these sentiments, arguing that the students were merely seeking justice and should not face police repression.
Looking ahead, the Congress party has vowed to continue supporting the students and their demands. Gandhi's commitment to stand firm with the protesting youth suggests that this issue may escalate further, with potential for ongoing demonstrations and political mobilization in Maharashtra as the Congress seeks to hold the government accountable for its actions against the students.
