The protests stemmed from allegations of irregularities in the electoral roll revision process.

On Sunday, protests in Maharashtra and Goa resulted in numerous detentions as demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protests were primarily fueled by allegations of misconduct during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, which has raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.

In Mumbai, the Cockroach Janta Party organized a protest scheduled for 4 PM at Shivaji Park, but police prevented demonstrators from gathering. Some protesters were detained at Dadar station, while others were apprehended for simply walking in the vicinity. Additionally, members of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) were also detained while protesting outside their party headquarters. Notably, Aditya Thackeray attempted to intervene by climbing onto a police van to halt the removal of protesters.

Pune witnessed a similar situation, where approximately 80 to 100 protesters, including members of leftist groups, were detained at Good Luck Chowk. According to reports, those detained were transported to Shivajinagar Police Station, prompting a gathering of supporters outside the station demanding their release. All detained individuals were released by nightfall.

In Goa, police barred protesters from entering Azad Maidan in Panaji, where a demonstration was planned. The main gates were locked, and a police battalion was stationed around the area. Some individuals who attempted to scale the wall surrounding the venue were also detained. This follows a previous incident on Saturday when around 600 protesters were detained in Mumbai during demonstrations in solidarity with protests in Delhi, including notable figures such as Tushar Gandhi and actor Imran Khan.

The protests were triggered by a September 23 investigation revealing that Election Commissioners had formally objected to decisions made by the Election Commission regarding the electoral roll revision process. Concerns have been raised about the potential disenfranchisement of genuine voters and the implications for upcoming elections. The Supreme Court previously upheld the legality of the revision process, but critics argue that it has been misused in various states to deny essential services to those removed from the rolls. As the situation develops, further protests are anticipated as activists continue to push for electoral accountability.
