On October 5, 2026, the National Commission for Women (NCW), in partnership with the Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), conducted an awareness program titled "Consultation on Review of State-Specific Laws" at TISS in Mumbai. The event was attended by various stakeholders including academicians, students, advocates, and representatives from civil society organizations.
Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the NCW, served as the Chief Guest and highlighted significant challenges faced by women, particularly regarding inheritance and property rights. She emphasized the need for women to have ownership of land and a voice in agricultural decision-making, especially in light of Maharashtra’s women farmers’ policy. The program aimed to address these issues and promote legal education and access to justice for women, particularly senior citizens.
Prof. Arvind Tiwari from TISS discussed the growth of the School of Law and its commitment to enhancing legal education. He noted the importance of fieldwork placements for students with the MSCW, which aims to empower women through legal knowledge. Dr. Narendra Mishra, Registrar at TISS, welcomed the attendees and reiterated the institute's dedication to social studies and community empowerment.
The consultation featured insights from senior advocates and judges from the District Legal Services Authority, who shared their perspectives on recent legal judgments affecting vulnerable populations. Notably, a recent Bombay High Court ruling addressed the challenges faced by elderly women, particularly widows, in accessing their legal rights.
The event concluded with a collective commitment to improve the implementation of laws affecting women and senior citizens, ensuring they can access their rights with dignity and security. This initiative reflects a broader effort to enhance legal frameworks and support systems for marginalized groups in Maharashtra.
