In a significant political move, six senior leaders from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) convened with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Monday. The purpose of this meeting was to advocate for the return of the Finance Ministry portfolio in Maharashtra to the NCP, which has been a point of contention within the party.
The delegation included prominent figures such as Dhananjay Munde, Sunil Tatkare, Praful Patel, Hasan Mushrif, Chhagan Bhujbal, and Dilip Walse Patil. Their discussions come at a time when the NCP is grappling with internal debates regarding the Finance Ministry's future. Notably, the absence of Sunetra Pawar and Parth Pawar from this crucial meeting has raised eyebrows regarding the party's leadership dynamics and cohesion.
Amidst these discussions, a core committee meeting of the NCP was scheduled for later that day at Ajit Pawar’s residence in Mumbai. This meeting aims to address the ongoing concerns about the party's direction and strategy following recent electoral setbacks. On Friday, Sunetra Pawar, the NCP president and Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, publicly dismissed rumors of discord within the party, emphasizing the need for self-reflection after electoral defeats.
The backdrop to these events includes the NCP's recent loss in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, where their candidate, Satish Chavan, was defeated by Pratapsinh Patil from the rival NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar. This defeat has intensified discussions about the party's leadership and strategy moving forward.
Looking ahead, the NCP's core committee meeting is expected to outline the party's next steps in reclaiming its influence in Maharashtra politics. The outcomes of these discussions will be pivotal in shaping the NCP's approach to upcoming electoral challenges and its internal unity as it seeks to regain lost ground in the state.
