Nashik has made a significant advancement in food distribution with the inauguration of Maharashtra's first 'Annapurti Grain ATM' on Saturday. This innovative facility enables eligible beneficiaries to access subsidized foodgrains under the Public Distribution System (PDS) at any time, breaking away from the constraints of traditional ration shop hours.

The inauguration was led by Chhagan Bhujbal, the state's Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Protection. He emphasized that this machine will particularly benefit working-class individuals and daily wage laborers who often miss out on ration shop timings due to their work commitments. Bhujbal stated, "Now the beneficiaries need not align themselves as per the timetable of the shopkeepers. They can simply decide their convenient timing, visit the facility, and take home the grains allotted to them by the government."

Maharashtra currently operates around 54,000 fair price shops serving over seven crore beneficiaries. The state is progressively modernizing its PDS operations by integrating electronic point-of-sale (e-PoS) systems, Aadhaar-based authentication, and digital record-keeping. These upgrades aim to minimize manual intervention and prevent leakages in the distribution process.

The successful launch of the grain ATM in Nashik marks a pivotal step towards a more efficient and transparent food distribution system. District collector Ayush Prasad, deputy commissioner Prashant Kale, and district supply officer Ramesh Gaikwad were present at the event, where foodgrains were dispensed to the first beneficiaries through the machine.

Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government plans to expand this initiative by introducing similar automated grain ATMs in Thane and Nagpur districts. This expansion is expected to further enhance access to subsidized food for citizens across the state, ensuring that more individuals can benefit from timely food distribution without the constraints of traditional shop hours.
