The new Film City will be located in Guhagar taluka, Ratnagiri district.
An initial investment of ₹100 crore is projected for the project.
Maharashtra currently has one operational Film City in Goregaon, Mumbai.
Maharashtra is embarking on an ambitious project to create its fifth Film City, spanning 125 acres in the Guhagar taluka of Ratnagiri district. This initiative aims to bolster the film production infrastructure along the Konkan coast, which has been identified as a region with significant potential for film shoots but currently lacks adequate facilities. The project is strategically located approximately seven hours from Mumbai, making it accessible for filmmakers seeking picturesque coastal settings.
The proposal for the Film City is being led by Ashish Shelar, the state's Minister for Cultural Affairs. The tourism and cultural affairs departments are collaborating to prepare a comprehensive project report. This Film City is expected to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, inviting participation from private entities within the entertainment sector. This collaborative approach is anticipated to enhance the project's viability and effectiveness.
Currently, Maharashtra boasts one operational Film City in Goregaon, Mumbai, with additional Film Cities proposed in Nashik, Nagpur, and Malad. The new facility in Ratnagiri is expected to include two or three studios, accommodation for film crews, and various locations suitable for shooting films and television serials. The estimated initial investment for this project is around ₹100 crore, aimed at establishing a robust production infrastructure in the coastal region.
The establishment of this Film City is anticipated to have a significant impact on the local economy. It is expected to create numerous job opportunities and attract filmmakers to the scenic Konkan region. Former BJP MLA Vinay Natu, who represents Guhagar, has been a strong advocate for the project, citing the region's scenic beauty and the need for improved facilities for production crews. He noted that while Dapoli and Guhagar are popular filming locations, they currently lack the necessary infrastructure to support large-scale productions.
Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government is focused on finalizing the project report and securing the necessary investments. The development of the Film City is expected to commence soon, with the aim of transforming Ratnagiri into a prominent hub for film and television production in the region. This initiative not only seeks to enhance the entertainment industry but also aims to promote tourism and economic development in the coastal areas of Maharashtra.
