Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Sunday that the state government is preparing a detailed plan to address the challenges posed by drought in various regions. This initiative aims to ensure the provision of employment, food grains, drinking water, and fodder for livestock over the next six to eight months. During a meeting with a Central drought assessment team, Fadnavis highlighted the adverse effects of deficient rainfall on crucial crops, particularly soybean, cotton, tur, and sugarcane.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the bleak prospects for rabi sowing due to water shortages are leaving farmers with limited options to recover from kharif crop losses. He noted that small farmers, who rely on agricultural labor for their livelihoods, are facing significant economic difficulties. To mitigate these challenges, the government plans to implement employment generation and food security schemes aimed at supporting these vulnerable groups.

Fadnavis expressed confidence that the Central team, which has been visiting drought-affected villages and engaging with farmers, would compile a report detailing the severity of the situation for submission to the Union government. He emphasized the urgent need for water supply, stating that many rural areas are experiencing dried-up water sources, prompting the state to arrange tanker-based water distribution. The government is also leveraging technology to ensure a transparent and systematic approach to water delivery.

Prioritizing drinking water for both people and livestock, the Chief Minister mentioned that available water would be reserved for drinking purposes until August 2027. Other uses would only be considered after these needs are met. Additionally, the government plans to undertake desilting and repairs of water storage structures under various schemes, with previous efforts in 25,000 villages having provided relief even during significant water deficits.

Looking ahead, the state government is set to submit a comprehensive memorandum to the Centre, prepared in line with Union government norms, to seek drought relief. An advance memorandum has already been submitted following communication from the Union Agriculture Minister. Fadnavis also noted that the Union Home Minister assured a forthcoming meeting of an inter-ministerial group to expedite the relief process. The government will coordinate with the Centre to ensure timely benefits for farmers covered by crop insurance. Central officials are currently assessing the situation in several drought-affected districts, including Solapur and Yavatmal, to better understand the needs of local farmers.
