The Maharashtra government has announced plans to establish four state-owned ports in the Konkan region, as revealed by state minister Nitesh Rane. This initiative marks a significant shift from the traditional model where coastal land was leased to private operators for port development. Instead, the government will take charge of both construction and operation, aiming to enhance revenue generation from maritime activities.

Currently, the Maharashtra ports department earns approximately ₹250 crore annually from royalties associated with 48 non-major ports and jetties. Rane indicated that the new projects could potentially increase this revenue to nearly ₹5,000 crore, transforming the ports department into a major financial contributor for the state. This shift is part of a broader strategy to bolster the state's economy through enhanced infrastructure.

The ports will be strategically located in the districts of Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, aligning with the state's Viksit Maharashtra 2047 initiative. This plan aims to develop infrastructure that supports long-term economic growth and sustainability in the region. Additionally, Maharashtra holds a 26% stake in the Vadhvan Port project, which is currently under construction in Palghar and is projected to cost ₹76,000 crore.

The establishment of these ports is expected to have significant implications for the local economy, providing job opportunities and improving logistics and trade in the coastal areas. By taking control of port operations, the state government aims to ensure that the economic benefits are retained within Maharashtra, rather than flowing to private entities.

Looking ahead, the Maharashtra Maritime Board is in the process of finalizing plans for these ports, with construction expected to commence soon. The successful implementation of this initiative could pave the way for further investments in the state's maritime infrastructure, contributing to the overall development goals set for 2047.
