Maharashtra is embarking on an ambitious project to establish a Film City spanning 125 acres in the Guhagar taluka of Ratnagiri district, located in the scenic Konkan region. This initiative aims to bolster the film production infrastructure along the state's coastline while simultaneously generating employment opportunities for the local populace.

The project is being led by Ashish Shelar, the Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister, with the tourism and cultural affairs departments currently working on a detailed project report (DPR). The Film City is expected to be developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, inviting collaboration from private entities within the entertainment sector.

An initial investment of approximately Rs 100 crore is being considered for the development of this facility, which is projected to include two or three studios, accommodation for film crews, and various locations suitable for shooting films and television series. The land earmarked for this project encompasses areas in Palshet, Velneshwar, and Tavsal villages, all under the jurisdiction of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).

The establishment of this Film City is anticipated to alleviate the logistical challenges faced by production teams working along the Konkan coast. The Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation Limited has identified Dapoli and Guhagar as prime locations for film and television shoots due to their picturesque landscapes. However, the lack of adequate studios and facilities has hindered production efforts for visiting crews.

Once operational, the new facility is expected to support a range of audiovisual productions, thereby fostering opportunities for local businesses in hospitality, transport, equipment rentals, and production services. Currently, the project is in the planning phase, with the final configuration and implementation details yet to be finalized.
