On December 20, 2025, elections will be held across 23 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Maharashtra, as announced by the State Election Commission (SEC). This voting will determine the president and members of these local bodies, with the counting of votes planned for December 21, 2025.
This election is part of a broader electoral schedule that the SEC outlined on November 4, 2025, which includes elections for a total of 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. Earlier in December, polling was conducted for 263 local bodies, with the remaining elections taking place this Saturday.
In addition to the municipal councils, elections will also fill 143 vacant member positions in various other local bodies. The SEC has emphasized the importance of these elections for local governance, which directly impacts community services and administration.
The SEC has also announced that elections for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), are scheduled for January 15, 2026. Polling for these elections will occur from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with vote counting set for January 16, 2026. The announcement has triggered the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, restricting policy decisions in municipal areas until the elections conclude.
Looking ahead, the elections are crucial for local governance in Maharashtra, especially in light of the recent formation of new municipal corporations like Jalna and Ichalkaranji. The SEC has opted for an offline nomination process for candidates, responding to requests from political parties, despite the availability of an online system. This decision reflects the SEC's commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process.
