In a significant policy shift, the Maharashtra government has announced that the minimum age for admission to Class 1 will be set at six years, effective from the 2030-31 academic year. This decision was confirmed by an official from the School Education Department on October 15. According to the government resolution, children must reach this age by June 30 of the relevant academic year to be eligible for enrollment.

The new age criteria will be implemented in phases, beginning with nursery admissions in the 2027-28 academic year. Under this phased approach, children will need to be at least three years old for nursery (Balvatika-1) starting in 2027-28, four years old for Junior KG (Balvatika-2) in 2028-29, and five years old for Senior KG (Balvatika-3) in 2029-30. This structured timeline aims to standardize age requirements across various educational boards in the state.

The government highlighted that previously, different age cut-off dates were being utilized for Class 1 admissions across schools affiliated with the state board, CBSE, ICSE, and IB. The absence of a uniform minimum age for pre-primary classes necessitated this new regulation, which aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The NEP stipulates that children should be over six years old for Class 1 admission, reinforcing the need for consistency in educational standards.

Importantly, the revised age criteria will not impact students who are already enrolled in nursery to Class 1 during the 2026-27 academic year. Additionally, regular students who have successfully completed their previous class from any recognized school will be exempt from the new age requirements when applying for the next higher class. This provision aims to ensure a smooth transition for current students.

The government resolution also allows school authorities to provide a relaxation of up to 15 days in both the minimum and maximum age limits for admissions from nursery to Class 1. Further instructions and guidelines regarding these changes will be issued by the Directorate of Primary Education in Pune, ensuring clarity and support for schools as they adapt to the new age criteria.
