In a significant development for aspiring scholars, the Maharashtra government has selected 21 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds for its overseas education scholarship program for the academic year 2026-27. This initiative aims to support students from the open category who wish to pursue postgraduate degrees at prestigious universities across several countries, including Australia, Ireland, the UK, Singapore, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The Higher and Technical Education Department released the selection list on Saturday, highlighting the scheme's inception in 2018. The program was designed to alleviate the financial burdens faced by students seeking higher education abroad. One of the selected students expressed gratitude, stating that the scholarship has made their educational aspirations more attainable, allowing them to focus on building expertise in their field without the worry of exorbitant costs.

The scholarship scheme offers funding for postgraduate degree and diploma courses, with a total of 40 seats available. After a thorough review process, the state government finalized the selection on September 17, confirming the eligibility of the 21 candidates. The selected students will study various disciplines, including economics, astrophysics, biology, management, information security, computer science, cybersecurity, microbiology, architecture, design, pharmacy, and technology.

This scholarship is expected to significantly reduce the financial strain on students pursuing specialized courses abroad, which can often be prohibitively expensive. However, the government has established strict conditions for the scholarship recipients. Students must complete their courses within the designated timeframe, as no additional financial support will be provided for extensions. Furthermore, the home department will conduct verifications, and any discrepancies in applications may lead to scholarship cancellation and recovery of funds already disbursed.

Looking ahead, the selected students are expected to adhere to all conditions set forth by the scholarship scheme while studying abroad. This initiative not only enhances their educational opportunities but also aims to foster a new generation of skilled professionals equipped to contribute to various fields upon their return to India.
