Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently unveiled plans for the India Jewellery Park in Mahape, Navi Mumbai, which is set to attract an investment of around ₹50,000 crore. This ambitious project aims to generate approximately 100,000 jobs, significantly bolstering the local economy and enhancing India's position in the global gems and jewellery sector.
The India Jewellery Park is being developed under the auspices of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). During the project's inauguration ceremony, attended by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Fadnavis emphasized the importance of this facility, noting it will be the largest and most modern of its kind in the country. He expressed optimism about the project's potential to strengthen Maharashtra's leadership in the gems and jewellery industry for the next several decades.
Fadnavis highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions India as a global leader in the gems and jewellery market, a vision that aligns with the objectives of the India Jewellery Park. Currently, Maharashtra plays a pivotal role in this sector, accounting for 58% of the nation’s total gems and jewellery exports. The Chief Minister stated that this new park will be instrumental in achieving the goal of elevating India's status in the global market.
In addition to the economic implications, Fadnavis addressed the law and order situation in Maharashtra, which he believes is a critical factor for attracting investment. He pointed out that the state's robust law enforcement environment contributes significantly to its appeal as an investment destination, making it a hub for startups and foreign direct investment (FDI).
Looking ahead, the India Jewellery Park is expected to commence operations soon, with plans for ongoing development and expansion. The government aims to ensure that the project not only creates jobs but also enhances the overall infrastructure and investment climate in Maharashtra, setting a precedent for future initiatives in the state.
