In a significant move to support students from drought-affected regions, the Maharashtra government is contemplating a tuition fee waiver for the upcoming semesters. Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil announced this potential relief on Sunday, emphasizing the need for additional measures beyond the current examination fee exemptions already in place across state universities.

The proposal, which is yet to be finalized, will be presented to the state government for approval. Patil highlighted that the financial support is crucial for families struggling with education-related expenses due to the ongoing drought. The government plans to assess the drought situation thoroughly before making any decisions regarding the tuition fee waiver.

Currently, the exemption from examination fees has positively impacted over 2.4 lakh students enrolled in 26 state universities, with many receiving refunds for previously paid fees. The state has identified 305 talukas severely affected by drought, and the existing measures aim to provide immediate relief to those students. Patil reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring that the drought does not hinder students' educational pursuits.

In addition to the tuition fee waiver, the government is also considering measures to prevent colleges from increasing their fees. The Fee Regulatory Authority (FRA) is currently reviewing proposals for fee hikes from various institutions. Patil assured that the government would take necessary actions to prevent any unjustified increases, thereby safeguarding students from additional financial burdens.

The proposed tuition fee waiver is part of a broader initiative to support students facing financial difficulties. Approximately 85% of students in Maharashtra benefit from government scholarship schemes, with around 40% receiving half of their tuition fees covered by the state. Furthermore, a new scheme set to launch in the 2024-25 academic year will offer full tuition and examination fee waivers for eligible female students from families earning up to ₹8 lakh annually. The government remains focused on ensuring that financial strains do not deprive students of their educational opportunities amidst the challenging circumstances.
