Opposition leaders demand accountability and action from the state government regarding rising crime.
In a significant escalation of political tensions, Maharashtra's opposition leaders have condemned the state government's response to a shooting incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff. The attack occurred on Sunday in Mumbai, resulting in serious injuries to Shroff's driver and a nearby auto-rickshaw driver. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the assault, prompting immediate backlash from opposition parties.
Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal has raised serious allegations against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suggesting a nexus between the party and the Bishnoi gang. He questioned the rationale behind the absence of police questioning for Bishnoi, who is currently incarcerated in Gujarat's Sabarmati jail, despite his alleged involvement in various high-profile incidents, including the murder of former minister Baba Siddique and threats against other celebrities.
Sapkal's remarks highlighted a pattern of violence linked to the Bishnoi gang, including attacks on prominent figures in Bollywood. He expressed concern over the apparent inability of the Maharashtra Police to act against the gang, implying that political protection is allowing them to operate with impunity. He specifically criticized the central government's intervention, which he claims has hindered local law enforcement from questioning Bishnoi in connection with ongoing investigations.
The implications of this incident extend beyond the immediate violence, raising questions about the safety of public figures and the general populace in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut echoed these sentiments, describing the current law and order situation as a descent into 'jungle raj.' He criticized Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for failing to ensure safety, emphasizing that if a high-profile actor can be targeted in broad daylight, it reflects a significant lapse in police effectiveness.
Looking ahead, the opposition is calling for urgent reforms and a reassessment of the state's security measures. With rising crime rates and threats against notable individuals, the Maharashtra government faces mounting pressure to take decisive action. The opposition's demand for accountability from the ruling party is likely to intensify as they seek to address public safety concerns in the wake of this alarming incident.
