Maharashtra Officials' London Trip Costs Rs 5 Crore Amid Drought
Opposition leaders criticize the Maharashtra government for spending over Rs 5 crore on a London summit while the state faces severe drought conditions.
Opposition alleges Rs 5 crore spent on officials' London trip during drought.
CM Fadnavis and Minister Samant withdrew from the summit due to drought.
Organizers dispute the cost, stating financial details are still being finalized.
In a controversial move, the Maharashtra government has come under fire for allegedly spending over Rs 5 crore on a trip for officials to attend the 'City Quantum & AI Summit' in London, despite 75% of the state grappling with severe drought conditions. Opposition leaders, including NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray, voiced their concerns on Friday, questioning the appropriateness of such expenditures during a crisis.
The summit took place on Wednesday, and while Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Industries Minister Uday Samant opted out, citing the ongoing drought, a delegation of officials still attended. Principal Secretary (Industries) P Anbalagan led the truncated delegation to represent Maharashtra. Pawar criticized the government’s priorities, stating, "The state is burning in drought... Instead of helping farmers, the CM has sent his favorite officials abroad at a cost of Rs 5 crore. What greater misfortune than this?"
Thackeray echoed these sentiments, questioning the necessity of the trip when the state is in dire need of effective management of resources. He remarked, "Shouldn’t officials be going district to district trying to figure out electricity and water management for the super El Niño days instead of enjoying a taxpayer-funded junket to London?" This highlights a growing frustration among the opposition regarding the government's focus amidst pressing local issues.
The Global India Business Corridor (GIBC) UK, which organized the trip, responded to the allegations by stating that the financial figure attributed to them is incorrect and that the financial arrangements are still subject to finalization. They emphasized that the event was planned eight months in advance to enhance Maharashtra's visibility on the international quantum and AI stage, aiming to foster investment and technological collaboration.
As the opposition continues to challenge the government's decision, the implications of this trip could resonate beyond immediate financial concerns, potentially affecting public trust in the administration. With the drought situation worsening, the government faces increasing pressure to justify its spending priorities and demonstrate accountability to the citizens of Maharashtra. The focus now shifts to how the government will address these criticisms and what steps will be taken to support the affected farmers and communities in the coming days.
