In a significant move to enhance transparency in healthcare, the Maharashtra government has mandated that all private hospitals, clinics, and medical establishments display their service rates prominently in both Marathi and English. This directive, issued in a Government Resolution (GR) on Friday, aims to curb overcharging and mitigate billing disputes that have plagued patients and their families.

The GR specifies that the rates for medical services and facilities, as outlined in Schedule III of the Maharashtra Nursing Homes Registration Rules, 2021, must be easily visible to all visitors. This initiative is designed to empower patients and their relatives by providing them with clear information about potential treatment costs, enabling better financial planning and reducing confusion regarding billing.

Under the new regulations, hospitals are required to place the rate lists in accessible locations within their premises. Additionally, any changes to service charges must be updated immediately. The resolution emphasizes that hospitals must also offer comprehensive information regarding applicable service charges and treatment package costs to address any billing-related grievances effectively.

To further facilitate transparency, staff at registration desks, inquiry counters, and billing areas have been instructed to assist patients in locating the rate lists and understanding the charges. Furthermore, hospitals catering to foreign patients on medical or Ayush visas must display specific package rates applicable to them, ensuring that all patients are well-informed about their financial obligations.

The directive follows a recent communication from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, highlighting the importance of compliance with these regulations. District civil surgeons and health officers have been tasked with ensuring that private hospitals within their jurisdiction adhere to these guidelines, reinforcing the government's commitment to improving healthcare transparency and accountability in Maharashtra.
