Maharashtra Implements New Age Rules for School Admissions Starting 2027
Maharashtra will introduce a phased age rule for school admissions, beginning with nursery in 2027 and Class 1 in 2030.
Minimum age for Class 1 set at six years from 2030-31.
Phased implementation starts with nursery admissions in 2027-28.
Existing students will be exempt from new age requirements.
Maharashtra has announced a significant change in its school admission policies, introducing a phased age requirement for students. The new regulations will begin with nursery admissions in the 2027-28 academic year, leading to a minimum age of six years for Class 1, effective from the 2030-31 academic year. This transition aims to provide parents ample time to prepare for their children's entry into formal education.
The decision is part of a broader effort to align state education policies with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Currently, various school boards in the state, including the Maharashtra State Board and the Central Board of Secondary Education, follow different age cut-off dates for Class 1 admissions. The government resolution specifies that a child's age will be determined as of June 30 in the relevant academic year, ensuring a standardized approach across all institutions.
The phased age requirements are as follows: children must be three years old for nursery from 2027-28, four years for Junior KG from 2028-29, five years for Senior KG from 2029-30, and six years for Class 1 from 2030-31. The Directorate of Primary Education in Pune will provide further guidelines and instructions regarding these changes, which aim to create consistency in school entry requirements.
This new policy will not affect children who are already enrolled in nursery through Class 1 during the 2026-27 academic year. Additionally, students who have successfully completed their previous grade at recognized schools will be exempt from the revised age rules when advancing to the next class. School heads will also have the discretion to allow a relaxation of 15 days in the age limits for admissions.
As the implementation date approaches, parents are encouraged to stay informed about the detailed guidelines from the Directorate of Primary Education. This initiative reflects Maharashtra's commitment to enhancing educational standards and ensuring that school admission processes are equitable and transparent.
