On October 10, Maharashtra's Public Works Minister, Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale, reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting farmers affected by drought in various talukas. During a visit to Latur, he stated that relief measures would be extended to all farmers in need, urging them to remain hopeful and avoid drastic actions such as suicide.
Bhosale's remarks came after he toured several regions within the district, including inspections of damaged soybean crops in Udgir tehsil. He highlighted that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is closely monitoring the situation and has visited both Marathwada and Vidarbha to address the farmers' concerns directly. The minister noted that the chief minister has instructed other ministers and legislators to engage with affected communities and provide necessary support.
A central assessment team is currently in Maharashtra to evaluate the drought's impact, having visited multiple locations in Marathwada over the past two days. Bhosale mentioned that a meeting between this team and the chief minister is anticipated soon, with an announcement regarding assistance expected to follow. The government is taking proactive steps to ensure that no farmer is left without help during this crisis.
In addition to direct financial assistance, the government is implementing measures to ensure access to drinking water by repairing borewells and wells, as well as identifying alternative water sources. Bhosale also indicated that plans are underway to secure adequate fodder supplies, with the animal husbandry department mobilizing resources to meet the needs of livestock in the affected areas.
Looking ahead, the Maharashtra government remains focused on addressing the immediate needs of farmers while also planning for long-term agricultural sustainability. As the situation develops, further announcements regarding relief measures and support initiatives are expected in the coming days.
